H-2A Visa – Hiring Migrant Laborers
The H-2A Visa is an American visa offered for foreign nationals coming into the country pursuing seasonal agricultural labor. That is, it allows migrant workers to come into the US and work as temporary farm workers. If you hire migrant laborers in the agricultural field, you will need to secure H-2A visas before they can enter the country to perform the job. If you do rely on migrant labor, it is important for you to know your legal requirements so that you are not breaking United States law by allowing aliens to enter the country illegally.
The visa itself is ostensibly for employers who anticipate a shortage in domestic labor and need to hire foreign nationals on a temporary basis. About 30,000 workers are covered by the program, and according to federal law, they are entitled to the same wage laws, workers’ compensation laws, and minimum wage laws as American citizens working in the United States.
If you anticipate a shortage in domestic labor, you must file for H-2A visas 45 days before you will need those laborers.
Additionally, you must conduct an active recruiting drive to secure domestic laborers before the government will allow you to bring in foreign workers. This means you will need radio, television, or newspaper ads in the area. You will also need to show hiring preference to American workers.
Should you be unable to find enough domestic employees, you will have to file a petition with the US Department of Labor saying that you are short of available laborers and that, should you hire foreign employees, it will not affect the working conditions and wages of domestic workers you have also hired. You will then need to file with the US Citizenship and Immigration Services for a petition for foreign workers.
You must pay your foreign laborers the same as your American laborers, and these rates obviously must be at least minimum wage rates.
If your foreign workers cannot reasonably return home at the end of the day, you must also provide them with free housing. This housing is subject to inspections by OSHA. The foreign employees must be provided with three meals a day, or adequate cooking facilities to cook their own meals. As an employer, you are also responsible for transportation and providing the necessary tools for the job.

LPGA States Farm Classic golf tournament Originally known as the Jerry Lewis Muscular Dystrophy Golf Classic, the tournament was underwritten solely by the owners of The Rail Golf Course for its first two years. A community-based not-for-profit organization took over to produce the tournament in 1978 and continues to guide the tournament today. States Farm Insurance became the title sponsor in 1993. Since 1980, over $ 2.5 million has been contributed to medical and children’s charities from tournament proceeds.On February 25, 2011, tournament organizers announced that States Farm would be dropping its sponsorship after 2011.In its early decades, the LPGA Tour was dominated by American players. Sandra Post of Canada became the first player living outside the United States to gain an LPGA tour card in 1968. The non-U.S. contingent is now very large. The last time an American player topped the money list was in 1993, the last time an American led the tour in tournaments won was in 1996, and from 2000 through 2009, non-Americans won 31 of 40 major championships.
Particularly, one of the notable trends seen in the early 21st century in the LPGA is the rise and dominance of Korean golfers. Se Ri Pak’s early success in the LPGA sparked the boom in Korean women golfers on the LPGA Tour. In 2009, there were 122 non-Americans from 27 countries on the tour, including 47 from South Korea, 14 from Sweden, 10 from Australia, eight from the United Kingdom (four from England, three from Scotland and one from Wales), seven from Canada, five from Taiwan, and four from Japan. Of the 33 events in 2006, a total of 11were won by Koreans and only seven were won by Americans. (See 2006 LPGA Tour for more details on the 2006 season.) In 2007, Americans saw a relative resurgence, winning 12 events. For the first time since 2000, two Americans won majors (See 2007 LPGA Tour for more details on the 2007 season.) In 2008, Americans grew in dominance, winning 9 of 34 events, tied with Koreans, but no majors, one of which was won by a Mexican player, one by Taiwanese, and the other two by teenage Korean players (See 2008 LPGA Tour for more details on the 2008 season.) North Carolina singer, songwriter and storyteller is set to kick off his “Crossin’ Carolina” concert and new CD at Charlotte’s McGlohon Theater Concert on Saturday, February 25th, at 8pm.
Cross’s one-man, turbocharged stage show serves up a collection of humorous songs, sensitive ballads, Will Rogers-like tales, Delta blues, and fiery Celtic and Appalachian fiddle tunes.
Mike’s music is a unique blend of folk, blues, rock, country, and Irish, spiced with a good dose of wonderfully warped wit, which "crosses" all musical boundaries and defies categorization.
Mike’s Charlotte concert coincides with the release of his fourteenth CD, “Crossin’ Carolina” produced by Patrick Cross, guitarist for the internationally acclaimed Michael Jackson tribute band, “Who’s Bad.”
"I really enjoyed doing this new recording because it gave me a chance to work with my son, Patrick, who was able to take some time from his rigorous touring schedule to be the producer. To make it even sweeter, he also did some great guitar work on the project.” Cross said. “Listening to this disc is like taking a road trip where you encounter interesting characters and situations everywhere you stop along the way.”
Mike's return to the McGlohon Theater will be the first performance of his 2012 “Crossin’ Carolina Tour,” with upcoming concerts across the state including Greensboro, Durham, Winston-Salem, Morehead City and Wilmington.
Mike’s song “Carolina Calling” was featured by the NC Department of Tourism for a Visit North Carolina ad campaign. A song he wrote in 1973 called "The Scotsman" gained notoriety as the theme song for the Dr. Demento Radio Show, and "Leon McDuff" was recorded and performed by the Dirt Band for the first Farm Aid Concert.
